Radical Reads: Body Friend by Katherine Brabon
Source
Radical Reads is an online book club focusing on literature that critiques and challenges current feminist topics. Join us for a vibrant discussion of Katherine Brabon's Body Friend , in which a twenty-eight-year-old woman with chronic illness has twelve weeks to heal, or rather, to acclimate to her new body and prepare herself to leave the routines, comforts, and interiority of her convalescence. All book club titles are available in a multitude of ways. For more information on using our online books, please visit the BPL's Stream and Download page. About the Book: In the wake of a major operation, a twenty-eight-year-old woman with chronic illness has twelve weeks to heal, or rather, to acclimate to her new body and prepare herself to leave the routines, comforts, and interiority of her convalescence. In the hydrotherapy pool, she meets Frida, a young woman who looks strikingly similar to her and is also in a state of recovery. But Frida sees her chronic illness as something to overcome and her body as something to control. She adores the pool and pushes the narrator and herself toward an active life, relentlessly pursuing the prevailing narrative of illness followed by recovery. But the narrator also happens upon Sylvia, another young, convalescing woman, resting on a bench in a nearby park, which the narrator frequents on the days she is too ill to swim. Sylvia understands her body and the narrator's in a different way, gently encouraging her to rest, to perceive illness as something happening to her, but which does not define her. Throughout the narrator's recovery, these women shadow, overlap, mirror, and complicate one another, and what begins as two seemingly undemanding friendships is challenged by what each woman asks of the narrator, of themselves, and of their bodies. "The novel's emotional core is heated by lyrical musings on the body and its relationship to language and narrative. This is an illuminating reflection on what it means to live with pain." - Mary Krienke , Sterling Lord Literistic Accessibility Notice : We strive to make our events accessible. Author Talk: Brad Ryan - Grandma Joy and Me: A Journey of Healing, One National Park at a Time
Source
Brad Ryan discusses his book, Grandma Joy and Me: A Journey of Healing, One National Park at aTime . Join us on a multi-generational family journey—experience the heartrending, transformative travels of a grandson and his grandmother, who embarked on a quest to visit every US National Park. Over seven years, they healed generations of family struggles and misunderstandings. Raised in Appalachia, Grandma Joy lived a life shaped by constraints and hardships, while her grandson Brad Ryan grappled with the weight of family rifts and unresolved pain. Together, they set off on a journey not only to witness the majesty of America’s wild landscapes in all 63 US National Parks, but to come to a new understanding between themselves, to learn more about human nature and family. Each park became a classroom, teaching them profound lessons about nature, resilience, and each other. Grandma Joy and Me follows Brad Ryan and Grandma Joy’s seven-year adventure of intergenerational healing and reveals the unique bond between a young man and his ninety-three-year-old grandmother—the oldest person to visit every US National Park. Don’t miss hearing from Brad and, briefly, from his grandmother, about their travels and this unique travelogue—an emotionally charged exploration of love, forgiveness, and resilience.
