Turning the Page: "The Day The World Came to Town" (DeFede)

Source

Join Derby Public Library for a powerful discussion of "The Day the World Came to Town" by Jim DeFede. Leading the program is DPL’s Technical/Reference Librarian, Marc Weissman—who was among the “plane people” unexpectedly grounded in Gander, Newfoundland on September 11, 2001. Marc will share his firsthand experience of the extraordinary kindness shown by local residents during a time of global crisis. He’ll also reflect on his visits to the National September 11 Memorial & Museum in NYC and the Flight 93 National Memorial in PA, offering personal insight into the lasting impact of that day. Please note: This program includes sensitive subject matter and images that may be difficult for some attendees. Discretion will be exercised as much as possible. Per GoodReads: When 38 jetliners bound for the United States were forced to land at Gander International Airport in Canada by the closing of U.S. airspace on September 11, the population of this small town on Newfoundland Island swelled from 10,300 to nearly 17,000. The citizens of Gander met the stranded passengers with an overwhelming display of friendship and goodwill.
