Pinellas Book Bus Summer Stop at ELCL!

Over the course of three weeks in July, the Juvenile Welfare Board’s (JWB) Summer Book Bus will make over 80 stops at community sites across Pinellas County to give away 10,000 FREE new books to eager young readers. This is the ELCL North Pinellas stop and will feature a special digital literacy demonstration and fun activities from myON, a personalized literacy program with over 7,000 titles available to Pinellas County students. Visit the community room to experience the dynamic myON reading platform, enjoy a fun activity, and then tour the Book Bus to select two FREE books! Registration is not required. Feel free to stop by at your convenience after 1 PM.

Tying in with out summer theme, Unearth Your Story, we'll learn about fossils and the past., Make homemade fossils and imprint either dinosaurs or other fun choices to make unique fossils no one has ever seen! Take home fossils to dry, or let them airdry. Open to students in grades 6th - 12th.

Join Miss Nicole for a traditional storytime followed by a craft, activity, or science lab that supports school-readiness skills. Children can be dropped off with caregivers remaining on the library grounds. Caregivers who wish to stay in the room are encouraged to step back and observe during storytime and crafts, giving preschoolers the chance to practice school-readiness skills such as following directions, making choices, and completing tasks independently.

Adult Field Trip: Brooker Creek Preserve - Before They Were Native – A Brief History of Florida’s Flora

In support of our summer reading theme of “Unearth a Story,” we will be traveling to Brooker Creek to learn more about the history of Florida's Flora! Over millions of years Florida’s geology and plant communities have undergone a myriad of changes. Driven by evolution, continental drift, ice ages and many more environmental pressures, today’s native plant communities are just a snapshot of the rich diversity spanning millennia. Let’s gently explore a simplified timeline of the events that lead to today’s Florida Native Plants. Presented by James Stevenson, Education and Outreach Specialist Additional Notes: This program will be held in the Brooker Creek Preserve auditorium. It takes about 10 minutes to drive from the preserve entrance (Keystone Rd.) to the parking lot, and there is a 2-5 minute walk from the parking lot to the auditorium. This program does not take place at East Lake Community Library. We will be meeting at Brooker Creek Preserve in the auditorium. Please register! Thank you.

Florida Talks: Telling Florida Food Stories with Dalia Colón

About the Program: In this interactive program, journalist and author Dalia Colón provides an overview of Florida’s history through the lens of food, from indigenous foodways, to the rise and fall of the citrus industry, to modern sustainability efforts. Through audience story sharing and audio and video clips, Ms. Colon keeps the discussion energized and personalized for each community. This event is free and open to the public. Registration is required as space is limited. Presenter Bio: Dalia Colón is the host and executive producer of The Zest podcast for WUSF and the associate producer and co-host of WEDU Arts Plus on Tampa Bay’s PBS television station. As well, she published her first cookbook The Florida Vegetarian Cookbook in March 2024. Funding for the Florida Humanities comes from the National Endowment for the Humanities and private donations. Stretching: The Somatic Way

Somatic flexibility technique is a gentle-release practice that retrains the brain to allow the muscles to let go, release tension and relax. Using slow, focused movements, this form of healing is a way of re-educating the way our brain senses and moves our muscles. If you have back pain, headaches, general stiffness or posture issues, this class could help you! Over time you will begin to feel more balanced and more free in your mind and body! Join us! Bring your own mat and yoga blocks. Please note that this class begins promptly at 10:30am. We will accept no late attendees due to the disturbance it causes for the rest of the class.
