Otherworldly Reads Book Discussion: "Old Man's War"
Source
834 Lake St., Oak Park, IL, 60301, US
Join us as we read and discuss the science fiction novel "Old Man's War" by John Scalzi.
John Perry did two things on his 75th birthday. First he visited his wife's grave. Then he joined the army. The good news is that humanity finally made it into interstellar space. The bad news is that planets fit to live on are scarce and alien races willing to fight us for them are common. So, we fight. To defend Earth, and to stake our own claim to planetary real estate. Far from Earth, the war has been going on for decades: brutal, bloody, unyielding.

Art Exhibit Talk & Workshop: Art Transforms Trash
Source
845 Gunderson Ave., Oak Park, IL, 60304, US
Learn more about the artwork in this month’s exhibit and how to transform trash into art. The three artists from Oak Park Art League will talk about their work and demonstrate techniques to upcycle plastic into different types of art. Participants will then be invited to make their own part of a community art piece. So come on out and feel free to bring your own plastic (though the artists will have plenty to share) and learn how to turn it into art in this hands-on workshop.
More About the Oak Park Art League and the Artists
Founded in 1921, the Oak Park Art League (OPAL) is one of the longest continuously operating nonprofit arts organizations in Illinois. Located in a historic 1902 carriage house in the heart of Oak Park's Historic District, OPAL supports artists of all levels through exhibitions, classes, and community events — and sits within walking distance of both Frank Lloyd Wright's Home and Studio and Ernest Hemingway's birthplace.
Linda Dunbar
With over 30 years as a designer, Linda has built a career grounded in visual communication, creative problem‑solving, and hands‑on making. Her work spans decades of print, logo, product, and package design—areas that shaped her appreciation for detail, materials, and the balance between form and function. She has taught workshops in paper art, bookmaking, typography, and calligraphy, sharing simple techniques that spark curiosity and help others explore their creativity. Her recent work has centered on meditative, process-based art that explores creative expression as a path to emotional well-being. Since January 2025, she has been part of the Oak Park Art League’s Coral Crochet project. Learning to crochet opened a new path for Linda, inspiring an interest in recycled materials and in using art to promote environmental awareness and community collaboration.
Bryan Northup
Bryan Northup is a Chicago-based environmental artist who uses single-use plastic to create wall reliefs, sculptures, installations, and wearables that highlight plastic's role in the climate crisis. Since 2015, he has innovated with plastic materials, earning recognition at the South Bend Museum of Art's Biennial 30, a solo exhibit at the International Museum of Surgical Science, and recently debuting wearable sculpture in Trashion Revolution 2024 fashion show. Northup's work has been exhibited nationally and internationally, including CICA in South Korea, Bortolami, and Berry Campbell Gallery. Bryan is the Executive Director of the historic non-profit arts organization, Oak Park Art League (OPAL). Born in Los Angeles, Northup currently maintains a home studio in Oak Park, IL.
Karen Sugay
Originally from the San Francisco Bay Area, Karen and her husband ventured to Asia where they lived and traveled for several years before moving to Chicago in 2000. After many years as a human resource professional, Karen chose to pursue her true passion as a creative by volunteering in the community. She used her experience in training and development and her passion for the arts to revamp an elementary school art awareness program, creating curriculum and hands-on projects that aligned with the curriculum. She also facilitated collaborative artworks for each grade level for auction at school fundraisers. Her work is inspired by my love of nature and the pressing environmental challenges of our time. Highly influenced by Asian art and design, her work uses plastic waste as medium, transforming waste plastic into organic patterns and shapes suggestive of the natural world. Her work ultimately offers a new relationship with this pernicious material, creating a delicate balance between humanity and the environment.

Oak Park Meditation Group
Source
845 Gunderson Ave., Oak Park, IL, 60304, US
We are dedicated to creating a space where anyone can practice meditation with others and connect with the wisdom of the tradition in ways that are meaningful to them. Although one doesn’t need to be Buddhist to practice meditation, our form of meditation comes from the Buddha by way of Tibet. We use a wide variety of Buddhist-inspired readings to support our practice and to bring our understanding into daily life. We start each in-person session with a pre-meditation stretch drawing from Qi Gong and Tai Chi body movement practices. We meditate together. For newcomers to meditation, you can arrange meditation instruction. Meditation can be done on the mat, sitting in a cross-legged position or on a meditation bench, in a chair or in a wheel chair. Meditation is followed by group discussion of reading material that supports our meditation practice.
