Defending the Declaration of Independence in the United Schoharie and Duanesburg District

Source

133 Bull Street, Delanson, NY, 12053, US

Please join historian Jeff O'Connor of Turning Point 1777 for a presentation commemorating America 250. The full force of the American Revolution came down upon the grain-rich United District of Schoharie and Duanesburg in the summer of 1777, while British armies descended upon the Hudson and Mohawk Valleys carrying out General Burgoyne's plan to seize control of the Hudson River and split New England from the rest of the American colonies. Through the end of the war, those loyal to Great Britain, and their Haudenosaunee allies, inflicted devastating attacks on the united district aimed at destroying valuable farms and depriving state and Continental Army troops of critical flour. Skirmishes and battles left whole settlements in ashes. Standing in the way, mostly alone, were the small Schoharie and Duanesburg militia companies, which had to protect a large area and a number of forts. Discover how the district coped with enemies, death, and destruction all around, trying to defend independence and their homes.
