Gem Painting at the Library!

Source

Millbrae, Makerspace, 1 Library Avenue, Millbrae, CA 94030

Gem Painting is taking the crafting world by storm. It’s the perfect mixture of paint-by-numbers and mosaic art, without the paint! Instead, tiny gems make a beautiful pattern and sparkle in the light. Gem Painting is a recurring series that invites creative makers to gather together in the same place at the same time every week. If you are interested in participating, be sure to register for the series, attend the first date, and then drop in on the dates that work for your schedule so you can work on your masterpiece.  Participants are not required to attend every session, but we will only be accepting new participants on a monthly basis. As this project aims to gather creative makers in the community, each participant's gem painting materials will be labeled and held at the library until the month is complete. Check the schedule below for when we will provide canvases to new participants and when we will only allow pre-existing participants to drop in. July 2nd-- Canvases available for new participants July 9th-23rd-- Drop in for pre-existing participants July 30th-- Drop in for pre-existing participants, can take home canvas This fun and relaxing activity is good for mental health and wellness. Come give it a try and socialize with your fellow community members.

Paws for Tales

Source

Millbrae, 1 Library Avenue, Millbrae, CA 94030

Do you have a reluctant reader? Sign your child up for a session to practice reading with a therapy dog at the library. Studies show that children who may not want to read in front of their peers are much less anxious with an animal present. Children don't perceive animals as judgmental, and reading to an animal helps them become more confident readers. We’d like to thank our partners for making this possible: Pet Assisted Therapy teams and their handlers from the Peninsula Humane Society & the SPCA's Paws for Tales program. Space is limited, so register early for your 10-minute slot at smcl.org/pawsfortales ! We do our best to incorporate drop-ins as much as possible though, so feel free to stop by!

Chen-style Taijiquan (Tai Chi) is widely acknowledged as the ancestor of all other styles of Taijiquan. This class will introduce the Chen-style Taijiquan form, Silk-reeling exercises and Wuji Qigong. The Chen-style Taijiquan form is soft and graceful with strong rooted stands that will help students to develop strength, balance, coordination and an understanding of basic Taiji principles. Silk-reeling Exercises are a series of spiral movements that promote muscle relaxation and flexibility by reducing physical tension and strain. Wuji Qigong (standing meditation) will help students cultivate internal energy (qi) through proper body alignment, improving internal energy flow, enhancing their immune systems, and reducing physical and mental stress.  Space is limited. Chinese Culture Club: Kunlun Culture

Source

Millbrae, Community Rooms A & B, 1 Library Avenue, Millbrae, CA 94030

●古人所傳【易經】藏有上天的秘密 "Kunlun Culture" - Tracing the Origins of 8000-Year-Old Chinese Civilization Speaker: Paul Lee In his book "Chinese Archeoastronomy" published in 2000, Professor Feng Shi pioneered that definitions of Chinese civilization should shift from a focus on tangible artifacts (the "sub-metaphysical") to intangible intellectual knowledge (the "metaphysical"). Based on the "Kunlun Culture" of astronomical and geographical knowledge, he suggested that the timeline of Chinese civilization should be traced back from the conventional 5,000 years ago to 8,000 years ago. In this event, Paul Lee will share Professor Feng's book and his study. The discussion will be in Mandarin Chinese.
