Tools of Independence: Revolutionary Approaches to Function and Freedom in Occupational Therapy

Source

Shaw-Roxbury, Nutrition Lab, second floor., 149 Dudley Street, Roxbury, MA 02119

Workshop One: Adaptive Approaches to Kitchen Equipment Tools of Independence explores the critical role of adaptive tools and joint protection techniques in helping individuals reclaim function in their daily lives. The program will highlight how occupational therapists creatively adapt everyday items to promote autonomy, reduce pain, and improve quality of life. As part of this year’s celebration of revolutionary art and the anniversary of the Revolutionary War, the Occupational Therapy Department at Massachusetts General Hospital and the Boston Public Library proudly present a program that honors both national and personal fights for independence. This presentation draws a line from the revolutionary spirit that founded our country to the modern-day revolutionary practices of occupational therapy profession that also has deep roots right here at MGH. In 1907, Mass General became the first hospital to employ an occupational therapist, setting the stage for a profession that would soon prove vital in the rehabilitation of soldiers returning from World War I. Just as the Revolutionary War was a turning point in the fight for liberty, the birth of OT marked a new era in healthcare—one focused on healing through meaningful activity, purposeful engagement, and restoring independence. Attendees will learn: Core principles of joint protection and how they help individuals manage pain and preserve function. The role of adaptive tools and strategies in supporting independence across various conditions. Accessibility Notice : We strive to make our events accessible. Author Talk: Ada C. M. Thomas - Aminata: Abbey Lincoln's Song of Faith

Source

Shaw-Roxbury, Fellowes Hall, 149 Dudley Street, Roxbury, MA 02119

Ada C.M. Thomas celebrates the launch of and discusses her new nonfiction book,  Aminata: Abbey Lincoln's Song of Faith .  Dr. Thomas will be joined in conversation by Afua Ansong, PhD, Assistant Professor of Africana Studies at the University of Rhode Island.  Q & A with the audience will follow. Attendees are encouraged to stay for the Roxbury Culture and Music Festival, taking place on the plaza of the Shaw-Roxbury Branch Library after the author talk. Abbey Lincoln (1930–2010), one of the greatest jazz vocalists of the twentieth century, was also an acclaimed composer, poet, playwright, actress, and activist and a towering figure within the African American intellectual tradition. Through constant reinvention, she resisted easy stereotyping and helped open a space for Black women artists to invoke their whole selves. Here, with meticulous research and insightful analysis, Ada C. M. Thomas contemplates Lincoln’s music alongside her poetry, plays, and reflections, revealing a multifaceted artist whose philosophical inquiries resonate deeply with the Black experience.  Thomas places Lincoln's albums in the context of both the female jazz and blues singers who influenced her and the male composers she collaborated with, including John Coltrane, Thelonious Monk, and Max Roach. Highlighting Lincoln’s central position within a vibrant global community of Black artists, activists, and writers, it also puts her work into conversation with that of contemporaries and close friends like Maya Angelou, Miriam Makeba, and Toni Morrison. Above all, it traces Lincoln’s extraordinary spiritual and intellectual journey, from her early life in Michigan to her rebirth in the 1970s as Aminata Moseka, meaning “faithful goddess of love,” and her ultimate resurgence in the 1990s as a critically acclaimed jazz artist and composer. With reverence and rigor, Thomas invites readers to rediscover Abbey Lincoln and embrace the transformative power of her words. Accessibility Notice : We strive to make our events accessible.
