The AGI Transition: How AI Affects Work and Life
Source
Main Library, Meeting Room
Artificial intelligence is no longer just getting better at narrow tasks—it’s beginning to look general. Many researchers believe we’re entering the early stages of the Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) transition: a period where AI systems start to match or exceed human abilities across a wide range of domains. This workshop explores what AGI actually means, how to think about it intuitively (without hype or jargon), and what this transition could mean for your job, your relationships, and your day-to-day life—much sooner than most people expect. Together, we’ll explore: What is AGI? How do experts define artificial general intelligence, and how is it different from today’s AI tools? Work & Jobs Which kinds of jobs are already being automated or transformed—and which ones experts believe are most likely to remain resilient? Human Connection How is AI starting to replace or supplement roles once filled by coworkers, friends, tutors, therapists, and companions? Robots & the Physical World What happens when advanced AI is paired with rapidly improving robotics—and which parts of the economy could change next? What you’ll get: A clear, beginner-friendly explanation of AGI and why it matters Real-world examples of how AI is already reshaping work and social life Live demos that highlight both impressive capabilities and emerging risks Interactive discussion and exercises to test your own intuitions about the future Come ready to grapple with one of the biggest transitions humanity may ever face—a shift that could redefine not just how we work, but how we relate to each other, find meaning, and navigate a world increasingly shaped by intelligent machines. Open to adults. Registration is suggested but not required and begins June 29. About our partner The AI Safety Awareness Project is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit founded on the belief that a safe AI future is one where the traditional pillars of U.S. society have a seat at the table in deciding the direction of AI. The AI Safety Awareness Project (AISAP) want to be there for the first step: education and skills-building, so that Americans have the necessary expertise and awareness to direct our AI future. They run workshops and education programs for a variety of community groups and public institutions including law enforcement agencies, libraries, churches, universities, as well as the general public. AISAP partners with industry experts to inform organizations about frontier AI research and developments, including topics as diverse as workforce augmentation and displacement, AI agents and companions, cybercrime, AGI (Artificial General Intelligence), and loss of control risk. Living History: A Visit with Betsy Ross: Presented by American Historical Theatre
Source
Clara Barton Branch, Meeting Room
Uncover the true story of Betsy Ross as history comes to life with Jill Lawrence of American Historical Theatre! In this presentation, attendees will be introduced to the real woman behind the legend. They’ll explore the history of the American flag as Betsy demonstrates how it came together from its original elements, and they’ll even get a chance to try her “famous” technique—cutting a perfect five-pointed star with a single snip of the scissors. Betsy Ross is often imagined as the humble seamstress in a small colonial room, carefully stitching the first Stars and Stripes. While historians question the claim that she created the very first flag, they do agree on the more grounded and meaningful details of her life. Because women’s contributions were rarely documented at the time, the true maker of the first American flag may never be known. What is certain, however, is that Betsy lived a remarkable and resilient life. She worked hard to sustain her business and remain true to her beliefs during the British occupation of Philadelphia from 1777 to 1778. It was through the determination and spirit of everyday people like Betsy Ross that the nation was born, and through their perseverance that the United States grew and flourished. Open to all ages. Registration is suggested but not required. About Betsy Ross Elizabeth Griscom Ross (January 1, 1752 – January 30, 1836) was a Philadelphia upholsterer widely credited with creating the first American flag in 1776, though this story, popularized by her grandson in 1870, lacks evidence. Born in New Jersey, she was the eighth of 17 children in a Quaker family. Trained as an upholsterer, she and her first husband, John Ross, ran their own upholstery business in Philadelphia. She remains a key figure in American history, representing the contribution of women to the American Revolution. About the Actor Jill Lawrence earned her BFA with honors in Musical Theater from the University of the Arts in Philadelphia and her high school diploma from the North Carolina School of the Arts in Winston-Salem. She has performed with the Ziggaraut Theater in Los Angeles, The Pennsylvania Renaissance Faire, American Family Theaters and The Philadelphia Shakespeare Festival, just to name a few. For many years she welcomed visitors from all over the world as Betsy Ross at the Betsy Ross house. Jill has been an adjunct professor at Camden County College, a writer and tour guide for Once Upon A Nation and a guest storyteller at the National Archives in Washington. About American Historical Theatre Founded in 1992, American Historical Theatre is a nonprofit organization dedicated to making history engaging and accessible. Through first-person historical interpretation, their performers invite audiences to connect with the past, fostering empathy and an understanding of the power of individual choice.
