Effingham County Cultural Center and Museum

Join us as Ronald Goddard shares his experience as a marine rifleman in the Vietnam war. Registration Required. When his troop transport ship left for Vietnam there were no patriotic farewells. It would continue to be so for the marines of Golf Company, 2nd Platoon, 2nd Battalion, 4th Marines as Goddard recounts their experiences in the rice paddies and jungles from DaNang to the DMZ. His book, The band never played for us : Vietnam war as seen by a marine rifleman in 1967, will be available for purchase. Ronald G. Goddard grew up seeing Hollywood movies that showed American troops boarding ships and going off to World War II with bands playing and well-wishers swarming docks to give soldiers rousing sendoffs. But when his troop transport ship left San Diego Harbor for Vietnam in March 1967, there were no patriotic farewells. It would be a chilling wake-up call for Goddard and his fellow marines of Golf Company, 2nd Platoon, 2nd Battalion, 4th Marines. He shares an accurate account of their experiences in this autobiography. From being issued an M16 rifle that jammed to being baptized in a blaze of fire on the front lines, he reveals what he learned about fighting the Viet Cong and North Vietnamese Regular Army troops in the rice paddies and jungles from DaNang to the DMZ. At nineteen years old, Goddard was a corporal leading squad sized patrols. Goddard will be available for book signings. Join us for a free community fitness class. These sessions are accessible for all fitness levels. These sessions are designed to be modification friendly and accessible for all fitness levels. Everyone is welcome—no special clothing or equipment required. Attendees can wear whatever they’re comfortable in (jeans, t-shirts, or workout gear). Light hand weights are great but, if you don't have them, the workout can still be done effectively without them. A bottle of water is recommended.

Participants can exchange ideas, learn from one another, and build a sense of community with people facing similar situations. No library card required. No registration required. All grandparents and caregivers are welcome to attend. The group meets on the third Tuesday of each month, except in July. The July meeting has been rescheduled to July 28.
