Completely Booked: A 20s and 30s Book Group

Source

Khepri Kitchen + Coffee

Join other readers in their 20s and 30s to discuss "Immaculate Conception" by Ling Ling Huang. This social book group explores a variety of genres and offers a chance to connect with fellow book enthusiasts. The discussion will take place at Khepri Kitchen + Coffee, located at 106 S. Emerson St. in Mount Prospect. The library will provide a round of appetizers for the group; other food and beverages are available for purchase. Book summary: Enka meets Mathilde in art school and is instantly drawn to her. Mathilde makes art that feels truly original, and Enka — trying hard to prove herself in this fiercely competitive world — pours everything into their friendship. But when Mathilde’s fame and success cause her to begin drifting away, Enka becomes desperate to keep her close. Enter SCAFFOLD. Purported to enhance empathy, this cutting-edge technology could allow Enka to inhabit Mathilde’s mind and access her memories, artistic inspirations, and deep-seated trauma. Undergoing this procedure would link Enka and Mathilde forever. But at what cost? Blisteringly smart, thought-provoking, and shocking, Immaculate Conception offers us a portrait of close friendship — achingly tender and twisted — that captures the tenuous line between love and possession that will haunt you long after you turn the final page. We recommend placing a hold on the selected title a month before the meeting for ample reading time. If you'd like to place a hold over the phone, please call the Fiction/AV/Teen desk at 847-590-4070.

Monday Night Book Group

Source

Mount Prospect Public Library, Meeting Room B room 152

Join us for a discussion of "The Berry Pickers" by Amanda Peters. Book summary: On a hot day in 1960s Maine, 6-year-old Joe watches his little sister Ruthie, sitting on her favorite rock at the edge of the blueberry fields. Their family, Mi’kmaq people from Nova Scotia, are here to pick fruit, but that afternoon, Ruthie vanishes without a trace. As the last person to see her, Joe will be forever haunted by grief, guilt, and the agony of imagining how his life could have been. In an affluent suburb nearby, Norma is growing up as the only child of unhappy parents. She is smart, precocious, and bursting with questions she isn’t allowed to ask — questions about her missing baby photos; questions about her dark skin; questions about the strange, vivid dreams of campfires and warm embraces that return night after night. Norma senses there are things her parents aren’t telling her, but it will take decades to unravel the secrets they have kept buried since she was a little girl. We recommend placing a hold on the selected title a month before the meeting for ample reading time. If you'd like to place a hold over the phone, please call the Fiction/AV/Teen desk at 847-590-4070.
