Great Danes Service Dog Visit: with Mobility Danes of New England

Interested in learning more about service dogs for mobility and balance? Join us in this informative session! *This program is for grades 9 and up. Adults of all ages are welcome to attend. No registration required. Thank you to the Friends of the Reading Public Library for generously supporting this program! About Mobility Danes of New England, Inc. Since 2003, Mobility Danes of New England has donated over 180 certified Great Dane service dogs—free of charge—to individuals facing balance and mobility challenges. Every dog is bred, born, raised, and trained at the facility, where dedicated staff and volunteers provide around-the-clock care and supervision throughout the puppies' critical first month. The comprehensive training program spans approximately 1.5 years. Once fully trained, each Great Dane is carefully matched with a recipient based on compatibility, height, weight, and specific needs. Training then continues to ensure the dog masters the exact skills their handler requires.

Learn to Play Mah Jongg

Learn to play Mah Jongg, a tile-based strategy game, with this five-week instructional series, taught by RPL's own Mah Jongg maven, Alissa. Mah Jongg is a tile-based game, generally for four players, that originated in China and has spread worldwide. It combines elements of strategy, skill, and chance. The game involves forming sets and pairs with 144 tiles, aiming to be the first to complete a specific hand as defined by a yearly card. In this four-week series, learn all of the basics, along with helpful strategies. Gather with others to learn this challenging and fun game! Registration will sign you up for all four classes. Please note that this series is cumulative and requires attendance at all 4 sessions. The Library will provide Mah Jongg tile sets and cards. Priority will be given to Reading residents and to those that have not attended a Learn to Play Mah Jongg class before at RPL. Mah Jongg Meet-Up

If you are an experienced mah jongg player looking for a place to play, stop by RPL! No registration required. You can check out one of our four sets at the Reference Desk before you start or you can bring your own. We have four library sets, and these will be checked out on a first come first serve basis. This meet-up is open to anyone who wants to play. Sets must be checked back in at the end of the program. This is an open class with self-led games, so there will not be any instruction. Please check our calendar for our instructional class times. There will be no meet-up on June 24 - July 15 due to a library program series. Calli is back for another fun, hands on, STEM program! Teens entering grades 6-12 will learn the basics of human biomechanics, including how bones, joints, and muscles work together to produce movement. They'll explore how prosthetics and assistive technologies can restore or enhance mobility. Then they'll get to apply design and problem-solve by building and testing a model prosthetic hand made out of cardboard!

Join the tiny garden craze with a revolutionary twist! A new trend in indoor and small-space gardening, ‘tiny garden’ kits offer a fun, relaxing way to enjoy gardening in any home. To celebrate America’s 250th, we will be assembling ‘Tiny Liberty Garden’ kits in this workshop. A representative from the Boston-based organization Therapy Gardens (www.therapygardens.com) will lead the workshop and provide all supplies. Each participant will leave with their own tiny liberty-themed garden. Registration required. Adults and teens (grade 6-12) only.
