Washed Ashore: Art to Save the Sea is making its way to the Topeka area this summer! This powerful traveling exhibit transforms ocean pollution into stunning art, like Bernie the Royal Blue Tang. From May through September 2026, the Topeka Zoo & Conservation Center, in collaboration with the Topeka Rotary Club, will bring the internationally recognized Washed Ashore® exhibit to Topeka. This powerful outdoor exhibit features six monumental sculptures of ocean animals, all created from discarded plastic and other debris collected primarily along coastlines. Each piece tells a story—about our everyday choices, plastic pollution, and the shared responsibility we have to protect our planet. Washed Ashore® transforms trash into thought-provoking art, making the invisible impacts of plastic pollution visible from northeast Kansas to the global ocean. This temporary exhibit explores the ideals at the heart of the Declaration of Independence through moments in our history that have defined their meaning. On July 4, 2026, the nation will mark the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence. Developed through a multi-state collaboration using material from an exhibition of the same name created by History Colorado, Moments that Made US looks at the legacy of our founding document through five main themes: "Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness", "Consent of the Governed", "Created Equal", "Free and Independent States", and "We Mutually Pledge to Each Other our Lives, our Fortunes and our Sacred Honor".

This temporary exhibit in the Topeka Room explores one of the costliest and most devastating floods in Kansas history. On July 13, 1951, the Kansas River Valley experienced one of the costliest and most devastating floods in the area's history. Towns all along the river were inundated with water, particularly Kansas City, Lawrence, Manhattan and Topeka. North Topeka suffered the worst of the flooding, which destroyed many homes and businesses. The size of the devastation led to the 1951 flood being called “the flood of the century.” This temporary exhibit explores what led up to the flood, as well as the recovery efforts.
