P/K Book Group: Brother's Keeper

Source

Brigham City Library, Rooms 1&2 (Combined)

Book club for kids and their parents. Includes a book to read and a treat to share. Parent/Kid book group is a monthly book club for kids, ages 7-16, and their grownups. All adults must be accompanied by a child. Themed snacks provided. Register here, then pick up a copy of the book from the library front desk. See our P/K Book Group page for a list of upcoming titles. Book Description Can two children escape North Korea on their own? North Korea. December, 1950. Twelve-year-old Sora and her family live under an iron set of rules: No travel without a permit. No criticism of the government. No absences from Communist meetings. Wear red. Hang pictures of the Great Leader. Don't trust your neighbors. Don't speak your mind. You are being watched. But war is coming, war between North and South Korea, between the Soviets and the Americans. War causes chaos--and war is the perfect time to escape. The plan is simple: Sora and her family will walk hundreds of miles to the South Korean city of Busan from their tiny mountain village. They just need to avoid napalm, frostbite, border guards, and enemy soldiers. But they can't. And when an incendiary bombing changes everything, Sora and her little brother Young will have to get to Busan on their own. Can a twelve-year-old girl and her eight-year-old brother survive three hundred miles of war zone in winter?

Brigham City Library, Rooms 1&2 (Combined)

Join other writers for a writing session with a twist! Bring your writing device (laptop, pencil and paper, etc.) and join other writers in a short (15-20 minute) writing challenge. RSVP Required: Participants must sign-up in advance. (Register online, in-person, or by phone by Monday, 13 Jul 2026 at 9 a.m., 435-723-5850). Please tell your writer friends about the opportunity. The more sign-ups we have, the more likely it is we can hold a group. This workshop must have at least 5 people signed-up in advance, or it will be cancelled. Workshops are signed-up for individually, not collectively. Access information: If you would like to attend via Zoom, please contact the library at least 24 hours prior to the event, 435-723-5850. Want to participate in a bigger share? Or are you ready to get something critiqued? Sign-up to be part of one or more of our Writing Share / Critique Workshop. Click here to visit our Writing Group page.

Critique Workshop: Writing Group

Source

Brigham City Library, Rooms 1&2 (Combined)

Come join a workshop where you can share a portion of your work (no critique), have a portion of your work critiqued, or come and participate in the critique without bringing any pages of your own. Choose your own workshop experience: Critique and Have Your Work Critiqued: Bring pages for others to critique and help critique the work of others. Share and Critique: Bring pages to share without being critiqued and help critique the work of others. Critique Only: No need to have pages to share or to have critiqued right now, but you can experience the critique process by helping to critique the work of others. Other event information: RSVP Required: Participants must sign-up in advance. Each author selecting the "Critique" option will have approximately 15 minutes (depending on how many authors are participating) for their critique and is responsible for their own copies. Each author selecting the "Share" option will have approximately 10 minutes to do their reading. Each author may bring up to five (5) pages, double-spaced, Times New Roman, 12-point font, with 1-inch margins. Authors bringing more pages or works with more condensed spacing or font may be stopped in their readings at a best-estimate equivalent by the facilitator. Details as to how many copies to bring will be sent out via e-mail the week of the critique, after authors have registered for the critique. Each author is responsible for making copies of their own work. Authors choosing the "Share" option do not need to bring copies for the whole group. They can just read (or have it read) aloud to the group. Though we recommend authors choosing the "Critique" option distribute paper copies others can write on and refer back to during the critique, then return to the author, we are aware that in some instances an author may not be able to get copies made. Authors may opt to simply read their pages to the group and still get feedback. Workshops are signed-up for individually, not collectively. Access information: If you would like to attend via Zoom, please contact the library at least 24 hours prior to the event, 435-723-5850. Click here to visit our Writing Group page.
