Celebrate America's 250th Birthday at the Library!
Source
Main Library
Beginning at 1:00 PM, Town Tree Warden, Bud Neal will unveil a very special bench created from wood descended from CT’s original Charter Oak. The bench, designed by Bud Neal, is crafted from a 250 year-old Woodbury Sugar Maple Tree that fell near the Old Griswold House. First Selectman Paul Zulpa noted that the home's current owner Ryan Fox is "thrilled that the town is using the trunk for this purpose". The pair have also created wood medallions from Woodbury's Charter Oak, a descendant of Connecticut's Charter Oak, in celebration of America's 250th. In 1976, each town in Connecticut received a seedling from the original Charter Oak and Woodbury's was planted and, for the last 50 years, was carefully maintained by Bud Neal. Since October 2026, Mr. Neal has been taking clippings from the Town's Charter Oak and drying the wood to create keepsake medallions. The medallions will be available to purchase on July 8th at the celebratory "America's 250th" concert at Hollow Park and at the Woodbury Public Library on July 11th.
The Library also will be highlighting "The Treasures of the Town of Woodbury", a curated display of photographs, maps and paintings from the town offices displayed in the Gallery Space, and a variety of other Woodbury history displayed in the Community Cabinet through July 30th. After the bench ribbon cutting, refreshments will be served in the gallery.
A variety of crafts will be available to make at this event, too, including patriotic star button rings, crafting a pinwheel, and doodling a patriotic zendoodle. Immediately following the bench ribbon cutting, join us in The Gallery for refreshments and view Treasures of Woodbury, a special collection of art and memorabilia owned by The Town of Woodbury. Enter to win a free basket of patriotic goodies, too!
America's 250th birthday—the Semiquincentennial—officially falls on July 4, 2026, marking exactly 250 years since the adoption of the Declaration of Independence.
