Mystery Book Club

Source

DENNIS PUBLIC, 5 Hall Street, Dennis Port, MA, 02639, United States

Mystery Book Club, Tuesday, July 14th (every second Tuesday of the month) at 6:30 p.m. This month the Mystery Book Club is reading Knife Skills for Beginners by Orlando Murrin. The Maid meets Knives Out with a dash of Top Chef in the debut locked room culinary mystery set in a London cooking school by MasterChef semi-finalist and cookbook writer Orlando Murrin. The Chester Square Cookery School in the heart of London offers students a refined setting in which to master the fine art of choux pastry and hone their hollandaise. Chef Paul Delamare starts to enjoy imparting his extensive knowledge to the recruits—until someone turns up dead, murdered with a cleaver Paul used earlier that day to prep a pair of squabs. Did one of his students take the lesson on knife techniques too much to heart, or was this the result of a long-simmering grudge? In between clearing his own name and teaching his class how to perfectly poach a chicken, he’ll have to figure out who’s the killer, and avoid being the next one to get butchered . . . The meeting is hybrid; online options are available. Please email: nlawler@clamsnet.org if you would like to participate either in person or online. DENNIS PUBLIC, 5 Hall Street, Dennis Port, MA, 02639, United States

DPL Book Club, Wednesday, July 15th (every third Wednesday of the month) at 2:00 p.m. This month the DPL is reading Theo of Golden by Allen Levi. THE #1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLING PHENONEMON; A Katie Couric Book Club Pick • A Jen Hatmaker Book Club Pick; “[A] word-of-mouth smash hit.” —The New York Times; “A treasure.” —Hoda Kotb One spring morning, a stranger named Theo arrives in the small Southern city of Golden. He doesn’t explain much about where he came from or why he’s there—but when he visits the local coffeehouse, where pencil portraits of the people of Golden hang on the walls, he begins purchasing them, one at a time, and giving each portrait to the person depicted. In exchange, he asks only for the person’s story. And so portrait by portrait, person by person, secrets are revealed, regrets are shared, and ordinary lives are profoundly altered. A story of giving and receiving, of seeing and being seen, Theo of Golden is an unforgettable novel about the power of generosity, the importance of connection, and the quiet miracles that happen when we choose kindness and wonder. The meeting is hybrid; online options are available. Please email: nlawler@clamsnet.org if you would like to participate either in person or online.

Understanding AI and Misinformation

Source

DENNIS PUBLIC, 5 Hall Street, Dennis Port, MA, 02639, United States

The U.S. has long been plagued by misinformation. But with the widespread use of AI, the problem has been supercharged: Deepfakes. AI-manipulated photos. AI-generated videos. Our info ecosystem is now inundated with inaccurate or misleading AI-generated content — and there’s no end in sight. Join journalist Philip Eil for a session about AI, the role it plays in creating and spreading misinformation, and how you can stay vigilant against its ill effects.   Among the questions he will answer: What is AI? What is misinformation? How is AI being used to create and spread misinformation? How is this AI misinformation affecting our society? Are there laws being passed, on the local or national level, regulating AI? What can people do to spot AI-generated content? And, more broadly, how can we successfully navigate a world flooded with AI-generated misinformation?   Phil is a freelance journalist based in his hometown: Providence, Rhode Island. His debut book, Prescription for Pain: How A Once Promising Doctor Became the “Pill Mill Killer” was released in April 2024, from Steerforth Press. He was the news editor and staff writer at the alt-weekly, the Providence Phoenix, until the paper closed in 2014. Since then, he’s contributed to VICE, the Atlantic, Men’s Health, The Nation, Boston Magazine, and Huffington Post, among other outlets. For many years, he taught in the Literary Arts + Studies department at the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD). He has also taught courses at UMass-Dartmouth, Brown University, and Columbia University’s graduate writing program.   This program is free and no registration is required. Paid for by the Friends of the Dennis Public Library.
