Origin Story:The “I Love a Mystery” Book Club spun out of a Maine Humanities “Let’s Talk About it Series” called “Refreshing the Whodunnit” that BHML hosted in the winter of 2017. The group got it’s name from the monthly article that volunteer (and retired librarian) Shirley Sirois writes for the library column in the Boothbay Register. Click here to find this month’s pick!
1:30 PM to 2:30 PM
Join us for a dual Author Talk with two Boothbay Region natives Jerry Farnham and Margaret Salt McLellan. The authors will talk about their recent book releases. About the Authors: Maine’s Blue-Collar author, Jerry Farnham, has written two novels, Red at Night and Red in the Morning. Jerry is a native of Boothbay Harbor, Maine and a US Navy veteran. Before serving his country, Jerry worked on his father’s lobster boat beginning at the young age of six. Now based in Gorham, Maine, he lives with his wife and two children. When not juggling a day job and his writing, Jerry enjoys archery, working on his Jeep, and reading works by fellow authors, including Maine’s own Tim Cotton. Margaret Salt McLellan is a Boothbay Region native. Born and raised on Murphy’s Point at the end of Back River Road, she spent many summer days exploring the tiny islands in the Sheepscot River. Equipped with a vivid imagination and a notebook, she crafted stories about buried treasures, mermaids and her favorite: Selkies. Her journals lond since tucked away surfaced a few years back and Margaret began weaving those stories into full length novels. When not writing, Margaret is an award-winning chef and also works in the Maine Lobster Industry as a Quality Control Analyst. Her first two novel Pearls on the Water centers around Malaga Island and The Thistle Island Selkie “tale” is spun around an island that remarkably resembles Monhegan. About the books: Last Light by Jerry Farnham Four years after the harrowing conclusion of Red in the Morning, the Finn family is finally finding their moorings. Jack Finn is looking toward the future, pouring his soul into the construction of his new vessel, Red at Night. But peace is a fragile thing. When Jack risks everything to face a treacherous storm—one that carries the echoes of his darkest memories—the fallout leaves Melissa feeling adrift. Her insecurity only deepens with the arrival of a slick Hollywood upstart determined to overshadow her life. Feeling sidelined in her own world, Melissa finds an unlikely anchor in a new friendship with a reserved, older stranger. But as the Finns navigate the choppy waters of marriage and parenthood, a shadow is falling over Boothbay Harbor. A lethal architect of chaos known as The Archer has a vendetta that threatens to tear their lives apart. Now, a fractured team—including the enigmatic Agent Andy Roberts, Carla Rand, and a rookie with hidden ties to the Finns—must race to stop a villain who hits every mark. Pearls on the Water by Margaret Salt This is a story of love, betrayal, and secrets, set against the backdrop of racial prejudice and ambition. Through the lives of Anna, Prince, and the island’s residents fictitious yet rooted in history, the book uncovers the personal and political forces that led to the tragic erasure of Malaga Island. A moving, unforgettable exploration of resilience, injustice, and the human spirit, this novel brings to life a forgotten part of American history.

Lesser-Known Participants of the American Revolution The American Revolution had so many moving parts: patriots and loyalists, heroes and traitors, colonists and foreign government players – to name a few. The theme of “Lesser-known Participants of the American Revolution” is to introduce a small number of the thousands of individuals who played a part during the years of the Revolution that brought our country into being. Many of those highlighted in the talk had ties to Maine during the Revolutionary War. Still under the umbrella of the Massachusetts government, Maine was represented at the Continental Congress by the Massachusetts representatives. The people of Maine, on both sides of the crisis, were very much involved in the events that unfolded. About the speaker Louise Miller is the Education Director at the Lincoln County Historical Association. Louise grew up in Connecticut and is a graduate of the University of Connecticut with a Bachelor of Science degree in Home Economics and History. The periodical’s focus was everyday life in the American Colonies from 1650 – 1780. In her position as Education Director, Louise strives to gives students and the public an appreciation of the rich history of Lincoln County, especially as it is documented in the three historic properties under the care of LCHA. Life & Liberty: Enslaved Residents of Historical Lincoln County on the Eve of Independence In the summer of 1776, the Continental Congress wrote of the “unalienable” rights of life and liberty, boldly declaring the American colonies’ independence from Great Britain. But what of the many people in the colonies who possessed neither a right to their own lives nor to liberty: the enslaved? This talk explores how Quash Winchell, London Attus, and Boston Miller, all enslaved in 18th-century Lincoln County, navigated the tumultuous and revolutionary 1770s and, like young America, determinedly pursued their own paths to freedom. About the speaker James Tanzer is the Special Collections Research Services Librarian at Bowdoin College’s George J. Mitchell Department of Special Collections & Archives. He holds a B. A. in history from Smith College and an M. A. in medieval history from the University of Toronto. His current research focuses on the Black history of 18th-century Lincoln County, Maine.
