An Experiment in Birding

Two friends, Stacey Pazar Huth (a scientist) and Noah Gibb (an avid birder, photographer, and birding tour guide) embarked on a Maine Big Year and discovered how their team effort was a winning combination. Join the authors as they present their book An Experiment In Birding. Their presentation touches on how they succeeded and includes select readings from the book.

About the Authors:
Stacey Pazar Huth, PhD, has made Southern Maine her home for the past 35 years. She
holds a doctorate in chemistry, and spent more than 30 years as a corporate leader and
scientist. Stacey is an active member and Trustee of the
Maine Audubon Society and the proud mother of her adult daughter. Now an empty
nester, she has returned to her lifelong love of birds and enjoys exploring Maine with
her birding friends.
Noah Gibb has been a Mainer all his life. Noah has earned a solid birding reputation in
Maine’s birding community for his keen visual and auditory bird identification skills,
calm demeanor, and sense of humor. In addition to his full-time job, he owns and
operates a birding tour business, Noah’s Birding Tours, LLC. A Maine Audubon
volunteer since 2013, Noah leads weekly Scarborough Marsh bird walks during the
summer months.

Birding in the Garden

Let’s see how many birds visit MML! Join Youth & Teen Librarian, Ivy, for a morning of birding. All ages and experience levels are welcome to gather in MML’s garden to spot, identify, and report our bird sightings as a group. Expect to learn some bird facts, get tips on identifying birds, and figure out how to properly use binoculars.
A limited number of binoculars will be available, but please bring your own if you have them!
As always, dress for the weather and bring sun & bug protection.
We will not gather if the weather is unfriendly to birds (rain, heavy wind, 80+ degrees).

Inspired by Ghibli, Animal Crossing, and Red Wall, this RPG is a communal storytelling game without any combat. The event is intended for ages 12 and up. Previous RPG experience will be helpful, but anyone who has done improv, theater, or imagination based games will thrive learning this new system.

We Dig Dinos! with CMTM

Hosted by the Children’s Museum + Theatre of Maine, this 30-minute program is designed for kids age 2-5 to get their hands dirty on a dino dig. In the words of CMTM, “ROAR! Step into the shoes of a paleontologist as we embark on a faux dinosaur fossil dig using textiles and faux dinosaurs. Act out how fossils form and use standard and non-standard measurements to observe replica dinosaur fossils. Work together to dig up mystery dinosaurs and use scientific tools and observations to learn about the creatures we find.”

Hosted by the Children’s Museum + Theatre of Maine, this 45-minute program is for kids age 5-8 to learn all about worms & the role they play in our world! In CMTM’s words “Discover how worms magically transform waste through vermiculture–worm composting! Meet live red wiggler worms, use dramatic play to explore what it’s like to be a worm, and learn how they help the plants around. Use worm castings to plan seeds and see how they grow!”

MML Plant Swap

Freshen up your indoor garden at MML’s first plant swap on Tuesday, July 28th @ 5:30pm!
Bring a small labeled plant in a pot you are willing to part with or a cutting rooted in water. The more you bring, the more you can swap! & Don’t forget to decorate a pot!
Rules for participating:
No pre-event drop offs. If you bring a plant, you must take a plant
Only bring plants in containers you are willing to part with
No containers larger than 1 gallon
Everything must be in soil or rooted in water
Everything must be disease & pest free
Everything must be labeled (labels will be provided)
After the first round of swaps, if you didn’t bring a plant you can take a plant
Weather willing, this event will be held in MML’s garden.
