Live Onboard the Marcus G Langseth with researcher Cody Balhau

Source

Come in out of the July heat to “Unearth a Story” for PPL’s “deep dive” virtual presentation with Cody Balhau , chief science officer on board the Marcus G Langseth research vessel, as they return from a global voyage of exploration mapping the seafloor! Ever wonder what it’s like to live and work on a research ship in the middle of the ocean? Become part of the team aboard the R/V Marcus G. Langseth, exploring a massive underwater fault called the Chain Transform Fault in the equatorial Atlantic. This fault slowly slips and shifts, and scientists are using special devices called ocean bottom seismometers (OBS) to “listen” to tiny earthquakes happening deep below the seafloor. In this talk, you’ll learn how the team recovers these seismometers from the ocean, what their research reveals about hidden fault lines and underwater volcanoes, and what life is really like onboard a research ship — from deploying high-tech equipment to watching the waves roll by. Come discover the science, the adventure, and the teamwork behind exploring the deep sea! This program is offered by Science by the Seat of Your Pants and STAR Net!
