African Americans During the Revolutionary Era
Source
Large Meeting Room
This lecture explores the sometimes-overlooked issues of how the American Revolution impacted people of African descent as well as ways that they participated in the Revolutionary movement. Individual contributions will also be examined with special attention to African Americans in New Jersey.
African Americans tenaciously pursued freedom during the Revolutionary era by using many strategies. For example, a "shrewd, sensible fellow" who could read and write named Charles was enslaved in Virginia in 1775. When Lord Dunmore, the colonial governor of Virginia, offered freedom to any enslaved people who supported the British, Charles immediately ran away taking clothing, saddle bags and two horses to try to reach Dunmore in his "determined resolution to get liberty."
The presenter, Lindsey R. Swindall holds a Ph.D. in African American Studies and has published three books and numerous articles in that field. Two of her books, Paul Robeson: A Life of Activism and Art and The Politics of Paul Robeson’s Othello, focus on New Jersey artist and activist Paul Robeson. She is a Teaching Associate Professor of Writing and Humanities in the School of Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences at Stevens Institute of Technology in Hoboken, New Jersey. From 2017-2019, she was a fellow with the New Jersey Council for the Humanities public scholar program in which she facilitated programs on race and U.S. history at venues across New Jersey with actor Grant Cooper.
