Virtual - Presidential Series with Doodler Heather Rogers: Andrew Jackson

Source

**PLEASE NOTE THIS IS A VIRTUAL PROGRAM THAT WILL TAKE PLACE VIA ZOOM. Registrants will receive a link to access the Zoom Webinar via email.** Welcome to our yearlong series in which “America’s Preeminent Presidential Doodler”, Heather Rogers, shares facts, factoids, and fun illustrations about the presidents of these United States. This month, our focus turns to Andrew Jackson: Into dueling (and had a bullet near his heart to prove it). Blamed John Quincy Adams for his wife’s death. Last president to conveniently die at the same place where his funeral was held and he was buried (his f*cking swearing parrot was kicked out of his funeral). Don't you want to know more (esp about that parrot!?!)? In 2026, journey through Heather's sketchbooks as she shares some of her favorite tidbits, doodles, observations, and resurrection stories about the first 12 presidents. Register directly on Zoom HERE. You can sign up for one session or for all! RECORDING NOTE: This program will be recorded. All registrants will receive the recording via email within 48 hours of the program. About Heather: Heather Rogers isn’t a historian, an academic, or an impartial storyteller… but she has read more than one book about every U.S. president. Out of spite. She was dubbed “America’s Preeminent Presidential Doodler” by one of her favorite biographers and she’s been repeating it ever since. When she’s not reading or doodling history books, she’s a freelance graphic designer, illustrator, and content creator. To keep her interest during her accidental spite project, Heather Rogers filled hundreds of sketchbook pages doodling her way through presidential biographies. Doing so heightened her curiosity and turned her into an insufferable presidential nerd. Along the way, she discovered unexpected threads connecting seemingly unconnected people, times, and events. She can’t get enough of the weird trivia, coincidences, and quirks. Like the fact that English wasn’t the first language of the first president born in the U.S. Or that a three-part plan was proposed to bring George Washington back to life. Don’t even get her started on William Henry Harrison – he was only president for a month, but she could talk about him for hours. *All illustrations for this series have been created by Heather Rogers and are her property therein. Please register for this event and you'll receive the link in the confirmation and reminder emails - make sure to check your spam folder for them, the email will be coming from Zoom. This program is sponsored by the Friends of the Ashland Public Library and is in collaboration with a multitude of MA and NH libraries.

Adult Craft Club - Brazilian Embroidery with Esther Begleiter

Source

Forgeron Hall - Rear Meeting Room/Book Sale Room

Welcome to Adult Craft Club! Craft Club is a great way for adults to try new arts and crafts while easing stress and having fun - no experience necessary! Craft Club may feature open crafting, staff-led projects, or art-based programming. All crafts focus more on joy than the outcome, allowing all to tap into their creative freedom. This month, we welcome Esther Begleiter, as she guides us through basic hoop embroidery. In this workshop, you will learn the art of Brazilian Embroidery, a beautiful three-dimensional technique that uses highly twisted rayon thread from Brazil to create delicate, raised floral designs. By wrapping, casting on, and looping threads, you bring petals to life as they stand up from the fabric surface. In this design, you will also use iridescence straw threads for a flower. Esther will supply original kits that include all the materials needed to finish the piece, except for framing. The kit contains a photocopy of finished piece, design drawn on fabric, various weights of threads, appropriate needles and needle threader, detailed and clear instructions on how to execute the stitch and proper placement, as well as clear drawn illustration on the sequencing on how to execute the stitch, and hoop for fabric. Participants are encouraged to bring paper and pencil for note taking. Monthly registration is required to secure your spot and space is limited. Thanks to the Friends of the Eldredge Public Library and to those who donate craft materials for making this programming possible! Please note: This program is for ages 18 and older. Please visit our calendar of events or connect with our Youth Services department for more information on children’s programming. Attendance Notice: Eldredge Public Library offers popular programs which often have a waitlist. Local Author, David J. Farrell, Jr. : Dead in the Water: The Real Story of Nathan Carman

Source

Forgeron Hall - Front Meeting Room

When Nathan and Linda Carman were a week overdue on a fishing trip, few thought they would still be alive. Even the Coast Guard had called off its search. So it seemed miraculous when Nathan was spotted — on a life raft, 106 miles south of Martha’s Vineyard — by the Chinese freighter Orient Lucky. But was it more than luck? His mother Linda was missing at sea. Then news broke that Nathan was the primary suspect in his grandfather’s unsolved shooting death three years before. The last person to see them alive, 22-year-old Nathan was now in line for an $11 million inheritance! He sure looked guilty. Or, did his grandfather’s dark secrets harbor other suspects? Was Nathan just misunderstood and targeted by police due to his autism? After ABC 20/20 and Netflix documentaries plus multiple books, speculation abounds and lacking eyewitnesses, the verdict on Nathan Carman has been up in the air. Until now! Maritime Attorney David Farrell delivers the first evidence-driven, insider account. Drawing on exclusive exhibits and his five interrogations of Carman, Farrell and his team fill in the blanks with oceanography, forensics, and missing documents they hunted down close to home and around the world. Dead in the Water readers will uncover never-before-revealed details about Nathan’s missing assault rifle and what happened to his mother on their doomed fishing trip. Then pull up a seat inside the federal court trial to see if Nathan’s dream of drifting away with millions of dollars comes true. Registration is required; walk-ins are subject to availability. About the author: David J. Farrell, Jr. received his primary maritime education and initial Coast Guard licensing in Chatham, Massachusetts. He graduated from Belmont Hill School, Williams College, Columbia University, and Duke Law School. For forty years Attorney Farrell has been a maritime casualty trial lawyer, eight years in Seattle and afterwards on Cape Cod. A past president of The Maritime Law Association of the United States, he received the U.S. Coast Guard Commandant’s Distinguished Public Service Award. A titulary member of the Comité Maritime International, he served as a legal advisor to the U.S. State Department and U.S. Coast Guard at UN International Maritime Organization meetings. A frequent speaker and author on maritime law and public policy issues, Attorney Farrell has written hundreds of non-fiction briefs during his career. Dead in the Water: The Real Story of Nathan Carman is his first non-fiction book.

(VIRTUAL) Migrant Heart: The Hidden Cost of the American Dream and Healing Through Storytelling with Reyna Grande

Source

In her ambitious new memoir, Migrant Heart: Essays About Things I Can’t Forget, beloved bestselling author Reyna Grande illuminates the hidden cost of the American Dream and the complex journey of healing that follows survival. What is the true power of stories? Can they heal the jagged edges of a traumatic childhood? Is the cost of telling the story worth the price of the cure? With her signature blend of sophistication and raw honesty, Grande interrogates how living between two nations, two languages, and two identities has shaped the woman, mother, and writer she has become. Moving from the legacy of violence in her hometown of Iguala, Mexico, to a bittersweet family vacation in Europe spent reconciling her own impoverished past with her children’s world of abundance, she uncovers startling truths about the nature of survival. Whether being racially profiled in the Arizona borderlands or finding unexpected wisdom from the slugs in her garden, Grande unflinchingly asks: How do we bridge the gap between who we were and who we have become? How do we turn pain into power? When memory threatens to define us, how can we use story to heal while still honoring our boundaries? Register today for this virtual talk if you identify as a seeker, a dreamer, or “anyone who believes in the enduring, transformative power of finding one’s voice.” About the Author: Reyna Grande is an award-winning author, motivational speaker, and writing teacher. As a young girl, she crossed the US–Mexico border to join her family in Los Angeles, a harrowing journey chronicled in The Distance Between Us, a National Book Critics Circle Award finalist. Her other books include the novels A Ballad of Love and Glory, Across a Hundred Mountains, and Dancing with Butterflies, the memoirs Migrant Heart, The Distance Between Us: Young Readers Edition, and A Dream Called Home, and the anthology Somewhere We Are Human: Authentic Voices on Migration, Survival, and New Beginnings.
