Does your child enjoy yarn crafts or want to learn how to crochet or knit? Join our new bi-weekly Yarn Club for Kids! It’s a great opportunity for kids in grades 4-6 to explore a new artistic skill, get creative and make new friends.
Participants should bring their own supplies such as yarn, crochet hooks, knitting needles or thread. Library materials are limited.
Registration is not required, but recommended for those who would like an email reminder on the day of the event

Saturday, July 11th at 10am for children ages 2-7
Young Athletes is for children ages 2-7 with and without intellectual disabilities. This program focuses on inclusive sports play that teaches skills like balance, jumping, kicking, walking/running, trapping/catching, throwing, striking and foundational skills. Our program is led by trained Young Athletes Coaches and Volunteers who want to share the joy of sports and play. All athletes must participate with a parent or legal guardian. Registration is required at tinyurl.com/sojplregister.

Kids are welcome to join our annual Summer Reading Club by registering at tinyurl.com/JPLKids2026. For every five books read and logged, kids will receive a special JPL Summer Reading brag tag. Keep track of the books read on paper logs available for pickup in the Children’s Room. Logs can be submitted to Children’s staff any time the library is open.
Those that read and log at least 5 books by Friday, August 8th can pick up their complimentary book and certificate beginning on August 11th in the Children’s Room.

Young Writers Competition 2026

From June 29th - August 7th for incoming grades K-6
Do you have a budding author at home or in the classroom? Do you know a young developing artist that is looking for the opportunity to express themselves? Students are welcome to enter the third annual Johnson Public Library Young Writers Competition! From June 30th to August 8th, JPL’s Children’s Department will be accepting original works done by students in the form of graphic novels, short stories and poetry! All participants will receive a distinguished young author’s certificate for participating. Everyone’s submissions will also be displayed on the library’s website at johnsonlib.org for all to see.
The winners will be included in an anthology that will be professionally printed by the library. The anthology will be added to the JPL children’s collection. Winning entrants will also receive a copy.

A community presentation focused on Immigration Know Your Rights and Family Preparedness (Power of Attorney) will provide important information to help individuals understand their legal rights when interacting with enforcement agencies. The presentation will also highlight the importance of planning ahead to protect children and family members in case of an emergency. Families will learn about Power of Attorney and how it allows parents or guardians to designate a trusted individual to make decisions and care for their children if they are temporarily unable to do so. All are welcome!
