Participants will take home their own painted Torito at the end of the workshop. Registration recommended. About the Toritos de Pucará The Toritos de Pucará are an iconic Peruvian craft originating from the town of Pucará, in the Puno region. These ceramic figures, which depict bulls adorned with vibrant colors and intricate patterns, have roots that trace back to pre-Hispanic times, influenced by the Pucará culture, which flourished between 500 B.C. and 200 A.D. in Peru’s highland region. The significance of the Toritos de Pucará is deeply connected to protection, prosperity, and fertility. Traditionally, they are placed on the rooftops of homes as amulets to attract good luck, abundant harvests, and protection for the family and household. The bull, a strong and resilient animal, is seen as a guardian that wards off negative energies and draws in abundance. Over time, and following the arrival of the Spanish, the Toritos de Pucará were incorporated into Christian beliefs, where the figure of the bull came to symbolize sacrifice and spiritual strength. In this way, these figures became a cultural icon of the Andean region, representing a syncretism between ancient agricultural traditions and new religious influences.
