Art Opening: Patent Models — A Celebration of American Invention
Source
Auditorium, Gallery, Kennett Library
Opening Reception: July 9 | 5:00 PM – 7:00 PM
Keynote Presentation: 5:30 PM
Step into the “Golden Age of Invention” at this special art opening and exhibition reception celebrating the creativity, craftsmanship, and ingenuity that shaped America. In partnership with Hagley Museum and Library, we are proud to present Patent Models: A Celebration of American Invention — a curated collection of rare 19th-century patent models on display from July through October.
From 1790 to 1880, inventors seeking patent protection were required to submit miniature working models of their inventions to the U.S. Patent Office. Today, these remarkable objects stand as both functional designs and artistic artifacts, capturing the spirit of innovation that transformed everyday life in America.
The exhibition features fifteen original patent models representing industries ranging from communications and transportation to home furnishings and personal care. Several models connect directly to the history of Chester County industries, including grist milling and rubber production. Visitors will also have the opportunity to view a reproduction of a patent document signed by George Washington in recognition of the upcoming 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence.
Opening Night Highlights
5:30 PM | Artifacts of Invention Join Chris Cascio, Hagley’s Alan W. Rothschild Assistant Curator, for a fascinating look at the stories behind the models and the inventors whose ideas helped shape the modern world.
Gallery Reception Enjoy lite bites and adult beverages while exploring the exhibition and connecting with fellow history lovers, makers, artists, and community members in Kennett Library’s gallery space. Whether you’re drawn to history, design, engineering, or art, this exhibition offers a rare opportunity to experience invention as both innovation and artistry.
Patent Models: A Celebration of American Invention is open on the first floor of the Kennett Library from July through October 2026.

Oak Classroom (2nd Floor), Kennett Library
This course will be designed for adults who want to confidently learn how to navigate the digital world while protecting their personal information, finances, and privacy. No prior technical knowledge of cybersecurity or any technical knowledge is required. This course is open to students, working professionals who want to become more secure in their work environment, parents who want to protect themselves and their children online, and anyone who genuinely wants to learn about safe online habits.
About the presenter: Alajah Riv holds a bachelor’s degree in Cybersecurity Analytics and Operations from Penn State University and is currently pursuing a master’s in Cybersecurity at Brown University. Through her work in threat intelligence and security operations, she has experience analyzing cyberattacks, identifying system vulnerabilities, and understanding how evolving online threats impact everyday life, often without us realizing it. She looks forward to helping patrons build confidence in navigating the digital world safely and fostering a community where we can learn and grow together to stay secure online.
Week 1: Introductions & How the Internet Works: This week covers the history and evolution of the internet, introducing participants to the key individuals who helped shape what we use every day. Participants will explore how the internet has changed over time, assess their current cybersecurity knowledge, and connect with others in the course.
Week 2: Developing Safe Online Habits: Participants will assess their own online habits by developing miniature risk assessments. Individuals will also explore safe browsing habits when interacting on the web, including communicating with friends, using social media platforms, and engaging in e-commerce.
