Studies in Crime - FULL

Source

Coventry Library Staff Room

This month we are reading Norco '80: The True Story of the Most Spectacular Bank Robbery in American History by Peter Houlahan: Norco '80 tells the story of how five heavily armed young men-led by an apocalyptic born-again Christian-attempted a bank robbery that turned into one of the most violent criminal events in U.S. history, forever changing the face of American law enforcement. Part action thriller and part courtroom drama, this Edgar Award finalist for Best Fact Crime transports the reader back to the Southern California of the 1970s, an era of predatory evangelical gurus, doomsday predictions, megachurches, and soaring crime rates, with the threat of nuclear obliteration looming over it all. In this riveting true story, a group of landscapers transforms into a murderous gang of bank robbers armed to the teeth with military-grade weapons. Their desperate getaway turns the surrounding towns into war zones. And when it's over, three are dead and close to twenty wounded; a police helicopter has been forced down from the sky, and thirty-two police vehicles have been completely demolished by thousands of rounds of ammo. The resulting trial shakes the community to the core, raising many issues that continue to plague society today- from the epidemic of post-traumatic stress disorder within law enforcement to religious extremism and the militarization of local police forces. Studies in Crime Book Group is a book club that exclusively reads true crime.

Daytime Book Club - July 27, 2026 (**FULL**)

Source

Coventry Town Council Chambers

The Daytime Book Group is a book club that meets the 4th Monday of each month, at 1 PM, in the Council Chambers room at the Coventry Public Library / Town Hall building. We read historical fiction, best sellers, and occasionally non-fiction. The Island of Sea Women, by Lisa See "Mi-ja and Young-sook, two girls living on the Korean island of Jeju, are best friends that come from very different backgrounds. When they are old enough, they begin working in the sea with their village's all-female diving collective, led by Young-sook's mother. This beautiful, thoughtful novel illuminates a world turned upside down, one where the women are in charge, engaging in dangerous physical work, and the men take care of the children. A classic Lisa See story--one of women's friendships and the larger forces that shape them--The Island of Sea Women introduces readers to the fierce and unforgettable female divers of Jeju Island and the dramatic history that shaped their lives." This book club is currently full. For more information about this book discussion group, please contact Jessica at (401) 822-9104 or jcoppa@coventrylibrary.org.

Evening Book Club: These Silent Woods

Source

Coventry Town Council Chambers

These Silent Woods by Kimi Cunningham Grant No electricity, no family, no connection to the outside world. For eight years, Cooper and his young daughter, Finch, have lived in isolation in a remote cabin in the northern Appalachian woods. And that's exactly the way Cooper wants it, because he's got a lot to hide. Finch has been raised on the books filling the cabin’s shelves and the beautiful but brutal code of life in the wilderness. But she’s starting to push back against the sheltered life Cooper has created for her—and he’s still haunted by the painful truth of what it took to get them there. Copies available to pick up at the Reference Desk while supplies last! If you have any questions or would like to sign up for the email reminder list call the Reference Desk at (401) 822-9105 or email Jen at jsturgeon@coventrylibrary.org.
