The Triple Nickel: Black Paratroopers in Washington State, 1945

Source

Doris Roberts Gallery

What is Operation Firefly? It was May of 1945, when an elite unit made up of some of the Army’s best-trained paratroopers were assigned to a remote airstrip in Oregon as part of a highly classified mission known as Operation Firefly. This first all-black paratrooper unit’s mission and service involving Washington state made quiet history and is all but forgotten. In a surprising and insightful presentation, Robert L. “Bob” Bartlett tells the tale of the “555.” Trained by U.S. Forest Service Rangers, members of the 555 jumped on some 36 forest fires as first responders, including the 1945 Mt. Baker fire. In the process of helping to save our forests, they gained military fame as the first all-black “Airborne Infantry Firefighters.” Speaker Bio About Robert L. “Bob” Bartlett Bob (Army, Vietnam War veteran) is the proud second son of Frances Bartlett and the late Walter Bartlett, Sr. (Army Air Corps, WWII veteran). Bob has nearly 30 years of university teaching and presentation experience in Eastern Washington. He holds two degrees from Colorado Mesa University; a Master’s degree in Sociology from Washington State University, and a Ph.D. in Leadership Studies from Gonzaga University. In 2003 he traveled to South Africa where he served as guest lecturer at the University of Pretoria. He is currently a faculty member in the Department of Sociology and Justice Studies at Eastern Washington University. Bartlett currently lives in Spokane.

Family Movies of the 1990s: Jumanji (1995), The Sandlot (1993), and Matilda (1996)

Source

Doris Roberts Gallery

It's our 75th anniversary, so this year we're taking a movie journey to revisit some of the amazing family movies that have been enjoyed by our patrons through the decades! 11 am, Jumanji (1995): Siblings Judy and Peter Shepherd discover a magical board game in their new house's attic. They begin playing it, unleashing jungle hazards like giant spiders and stampeding rhinos, and freeing Alan Parrish (Robin Williams), a man trapped inside the game for 26 years, forcing them all to finish playing to end the chaos. 1 pm, The Sandlot (1993): In the summer of '62, Scotty Smalls moves to a new 'hood and joins a ragtag baseball team at the local "sandlot," even though he can't play to save his life. The boys bond over the game and various hijinks—until disaster strikes! Smalls "borrows" a baseball from his stepdad, totally unaware it's signed by BABE RUTH. He promptly hits a home run and loses the priceless souvenir over the fence, right into the yard of the legendary, slobbery, and terrifying dog known as "THE BEAST." The gang launches a series of hilarious, desperate missions to rescue the ball, but at some point, they're going to have to face the Beast. 3 pm, Matilda (1996): A girl gifted with a keen intellect and psychic powers uses both to get even with her callous family and free her kindly schoolteacher from the tyrannical grip of a sadistic headmistress. Light snacks and movie licensing are courtesy of the Friends of the Richland Library. Feel free to bring blankets to lay on in front of the screen! We attempt to keep our family movies sensory-friendly as possible with plenty of ambient light, lower volume than the movie theaters, and room to fidget. If you need additional sensory accommodations, please let our staff know!
