Socrates Cafe

Paso Robles City Library - Story Hour Room

Join us for Socrates Café, a gathering where people explore philosophical ideas through discussion. Based on the Socratic method of learning, the goal is to work together to create meaning from complex questions. Join us on Tuesday, July 14, 5:30-7 pm in the Library's Story Hour Room. July's topic will attempt to find answers to the question "Is the American pursuit of happiness merely a private hunt for personal pleasure or is it a rigorous public duty to the common good-- or both?" This discussion is part of the library’s USA 250 events. How do you define the pursuit of happiness? Is it possible for United States residents to expect a certain level of happiness and what does that look like? Can both personal and communal happiness coexist? Come join our discussion and share your thoughts on this topic. Registration required. For ages 16 .

Book Group: The Small and the Mighty by Sharon McMahon

Source

Paso Robles City Library - Story Hour Room

You are invited to join the Paso Robles City Library’s monthly book group for a discussion of The Small and the Mighty by Sharon McMahon. This title is available in regular and large print through the Black Gold Library System and as an eBook and audiobook using the library’s Libby digital platform. On Wednesday, July 15, beginning at 5:30 p.m., enhance your reading experience by participating in a discussion of the book. In The Small and the Mighty, Sharon McMahon proves that the most remarkable Americans are often ordinary people who didn’t make it into the textbooks. Not the presidents, but the telephone operators. Not the aristocrats, but the schoolteachers. Through meticulous research, she discovers history’s unsung characters and brings their rich, riveting stories to light for the first time. You’ll meet a woman astride a white horse riding down Pennsylvania Ave, a young boy detained at a Japanese incarceration camp, a formerly enslaved woman on a mission to reunite with her daughter, a poet on a train, and a teacher who learns to work with her enemies. More than one thing is bombed, and multiple people surprisingly become rich. Some rich with money, and some wealthy with things that matter more. This is a book about what really made America – and Americans – great. McMahon’s cast of improbable champions will become familiar friends, lighting the path we journey in our quest to make the world more just, peaceful, good, and free. Space is limited. For ages 16 .
