Socrates Café

Source

Computer Training Room, Lewes Public Library

In-Person or Online Socrates Café is a discussion group for adults that provides an opportunity for people from a variety of backgrounds to share their knowledge and experiences from a philosophical perspective. These are open-invitation meetings that promote the sharing and exploration of ideas rather than debating the pros and cons of different viewpoints that impact our personal lives, our communities, and society at large. The goal is to learn from each other by exchanging thoughts and reflections, allowing us to journey beyond our personal limitations and to expand our horizons. NOTE: this session is available to attend in-person or through Zoom. You MUST REGISTER and indicate which you prefer. If you need assistance with registration or getting your Zoom invitation, please email the library. Basic written instructions for using Zoom may be found here and a brief video tutorial may be found here. Closed captioning is available for all our sessions. Spanish Conversation Group

Source

Computer Training Room, Lewes Public Library

In-Person or Online Join Spanish speakers 18 to improve your Spanish-speaking skills. Basic Spanish conversational ability is required. NOTE: this is not a traditional class — there is no Spanish teacher. Instead, it is a group of people who already speak some Spanish, or who have studied some Spanish, or who are now taking some classes elsewhere. Members include retirees, college students, and others who have a range of Spanish speaking abilities. Members of the group make suggestions as to what we might do in future classes. There is usually a ‘homework’ assignment preparing each person to talk in Spanish for 2 to 3 minutes to the group. There are icebreakers, games, and invited guests who speak on various topics. Each week is different. Nearly all of the discussions are in Spanish. The group is very informal, friendly, and there is no pressure to participate. Information on enabling closed captioning in Zoom may be found here.

Conversation with John Kenney | I See You've Called in Dead

Source

Large Meeting Room, Lewes Public Library

In-Person or Online Join Lewes Public Library, Rehoboth Beach Writers Guild, and Browseabout Books in-person at the library or online for a conversation with John Kenney, author of I See You've Called in Dead. Kenney will be in conversation with Maribeth Fischer, author of three acclaimed novels and the founder and executive director of the Rehoboth Beach Writers Guild. Obituary writer Bud Stanley isn't really living his best life. He's fallen into a funk after a divorce. (She left him for another man, who, in fairness, was far more interesting.) He's not doing his job well. He's given up on dating. And he's about to be fired for accidentally publishing his own obituary one mildly drunken night (though technically the company can't legally fire a dead person). As Bud awaits his fate at work, he does the only logical thing: He goes to the wakes and funerals of total strangers to learn how to live again. John Kenney is the New York Times bestselling author of Love Poems for Married People and the novels Talk to Me and Truth in Advertising, which won the Thurber Prize for American Humor. He is a longtime contributor to The New Yorker and lives in Larchmont, New York. We invite you to support the author by purchasing a copy of their book from Browseabout Books. Call-in orders are accepted at (302) 226-2665 or you can stop by the store to purchase a copy. For store hours, please visit their website. Each copy purchased comes signed. Books will be available for sale and for signing at the event. Each individual attending in-person must register to reserve a seat. Do not list two people on one registration. This event is sponsored by The Micklin Family. NOTE: this session is available to attend in-person or through Zoom. You MUST REGISTER and indicate which you prefer. If you need assistance with registration or getting your Zoom invitation, please email us. Basic written instructions for using Zoom may be found here and a brief video tutorial may be found here. Closed captioning is available for all our sessions. Information on enabling closed captioning in Zoom may be found here.
