Cooking by the Book

Meeting Room A & B (Combined), South Coastal Public Library
Cooking by the Book!
Join us once a month for a cookbook book club at the library!
Each month, participants will make a recipe from the chosen cookbook (voted by members of the group) and then will bring in the dish to share with the group.
Participants are encouraged to discuss cooking, recipes and how to improve them, and the book itself. This club is also a great way for you to meet members of your community and to try new foods!
This month, we will be cooking from Africana by Lerato Umah-Shaylor
Copies of the book will be available for checkout at the circulation desk while supplies last. A reference copy will be available upon request if no other copies are available.
Participants are encouraged to bring their own Tupperware to take leftovers to go.
For ages 18 & up, please.
Please be advised that the food prepared here may contain these ingredients: milk, eggs, wheat, soybean, peanuts, tree nuts, and other common food allergens.

Vinyasa Yoga
Source
Meeting Room A & B (Combined), South Coastal Public Library
Enjoy free Vinyasa Yoga Classes with Sarah Schaber, RYT-500 certified yoga instructor, on select Fridays throughout the summer.
In this class we move through a flowing practice that connects the postures with the breath, and will be moderately paced with some more challenging poses than gentle flow. This can help to create energy, build strength, and promote flexibility and circulation throughout the body. We will be moving through various positioning (i.e. lying on our backs and abdomen, seated, hands and knees, and standing.) In order to ensure all participants' safety, we do ask that you are able to move and reposition independently. We will end the class with a deep relaxation to help release stress and tension and to integrate all the benefits of our yoga practice to leave you feeling calm and focused. Ages 18 please.
Reminders:
Please bring a yoga mat or towel from home.
Advanced registration is encouraged as it guarantees your spot in the class. We do have a few walk-in spots in each class for those that prefer to just drop-in (first come, first serve as space permits). To register go online, visit us, or give us a call at 302-858-5518.
If you are new to yoga or are looking for a more gentle and slow practice, please consider Gentle Flow with Sarah instead. Held on most 3rd and 4th Mondays of the month at 10:15 am. While vinyasa is more challenging than gentle flow, all skill levels are still welcome, and chairs are always available at the library.
This library program is designed to supplement library materials and services that promote community-based health literacy and to foster fitness and healthy habits within individuals.

Migrant Heart: The Hidden Cost of the American Dream and Healing Through Storytelling with Reyna Grande (online)
Source
Online Meeting, South Coastal Public Library
In her ambitious new memoir, Migrant Heart: Essays About Things I Can’t Forget, beloved bestselling author Reyna Grande illuminates the hidden cost of the American Dream and the complex journey of healing that follows survival.
What is the true power of stories? Can they heal the jagged edges of a traumatic childhood? Is the cost of telling the story worth the price of the cure?
With her signature blend of sophistication and raw honesty, Grande interrogates how living between two nations, two languages, and two identities has shaped the woman, mother, and writer she has become. Moving from the legacy of violence in her hometown of Iguala, Mexico, to a bittersweet family vacation in Europe spent reconciling her own impoverished past with her children’s world of abundance, she uncovers startling truths about the nature of survival.
Whether being racially profiled in the Arizona borderlands or finding unexpected wisdom from the slugs in her garden, Grande unflinchingly asks: How do we bridge the gap between who we were and who we have become? How do we turn pain into power? When memory threatens to define us, how can we use story to heal while still honoring our boundaries?
Register today for this virtual talk if you identify as a seeker, a dreamer, or “anyone who believes in the enduring, transformative power of finding one’s voice.”
About the Author:
Reyna Grande is an award-winning author, motivational speaker, and writing teacher. As a young girl, she crossed the US–Mexico border to join her family in Los Angeles, a harrowing journey chronicled in The Distance Between Us, a National Book Critics Circle Award finalist. Her other books include the novels A Ballad of Love and Glory, Across a Hundred Mountains, and Dancing with Butterflies, the memoirs Migrant Heart, The Distance Between Us: Young Readers Edition, and A Dream Called Home, and the anthology Somewhere We Are Human: Authentic Voices on Migration, Survival, and New Beginnings. She lives in Woodland, California, with her husband and two children. Visit ReynaGrande.com for more information.
