SBA Summer Small Business Series

Auditorium, New Albany Main Library
Meet us at the library July 15, 22, and 29 for the SBA Summer Small Business Series where we’ll dive into hot topics affecting all entrepreneurs. Brought to you by the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) Indiana District Office, this series starts at the beginning, explores funding fixes, and sets you up for operational success.
July 15, 1pm - Session #1 - Getting Started – Here’s where you’ll meet members of our expert Southeast Small Business Development Center team and learn what you need to do BEFORE you open your doors…and after.
July 22, 1pm – Session #2 – Funding Fuel – We’re bringing lenders and bankers to the table for a panel discussion on what they need from you to say YES to financing the expansion of your small business dream.
July 28, 1pm – Session #3 – The Daily Grind & Hiring Help – Day-to-day operations – aka the daily grind is a lot more than what you do or produce best, it’s hiring employees, keeping the lights on, paying bills, securing licenses, filing paperwork, maintaining compliance…all the things that help you keep the doors open, the lights on, and out of jail. We’re bringing those human resources, operations, and staffing experts to you for some open discussion and to answer your questions.
All sessions are free. Snacks will be provided. Register for one, two, or all three of our sessions. Many thanks to the Floyd Co. Library for hosting these sessions and to the Southeast Indiana Small Business Development Center for pitching in with the assist. All U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) programs are extended to the public on a nondiscriminatory basis. About the book:
(For content warnings, check out the book's page on StoryGraph and scroll to the bottom)
It's 1980 in New York City, and nowhere is the city's glamour and energy better reflected than in the burgeoning Harlem ball scene, where seventeen-year-old Angel first comes into her own. Burned by her traumatic past, Angel is new to the drag world, new to ball culture, and has a yearning inside of her to help create family for those without. When she falls in love with Hector, a beautiful young man who dreams of becoming a professional dancer, the two decide to form the House of Xtravaganza, the first-ever all-Latino house in the Harlem ball circuit. But when Hector dies of AIDS-related complications, Angel must bear the responsibility of tending to their house alone.
As mother of the house, Angel recruits Venus, a whip-fast trans girl who dreams of finding a rich man to take care of her; Juanito, a quiet boy who loves fabrics and design; and Daniel, a butch queen who accidentally saves Venus's life. The Xtravaganzas must learn to navigate sex work, addiction, and persistent abuse, leaning on each other as bulwarks against a world that resists them. All are ambitious, resilient, and determined to control their own fates, even as they hurtle toward devastating consequences.
