All Hands: Yankee Whaling, The U.S. Navy, and the Treasury Department
Source
Program Room, Dighton Public Library
A lecture called All Hands offers a new interpretation of an important theme in American maritime history: the intersections between U.S. whaling and the U.S. Navy. From South America to the Indian Ocean, across the Pacific and into the waters of Siberia and Alaska, these two sea services together helped establish a core American maritime cultural identity around the world. This presentation is a direct result of maritime history done through the study of three-dimensional objects, fine and decorative arts and cartography. Michael P. Dyer is a scholar and curator of maritime history specializing in whaling history and cartography. He has served as Curator of Maritime History working with three of the greatest subject-matter collections in the U.S. including Mystic Seaport Museum, the New Bedford Whaling Museum, and the Kendall Whaling Museum.
