African Drumming Show

Mayukwa Kashiwa will share his culture in a vibrant performance incorporating African drumming and dance, along with educative traditional storytelling! This program will be held outside - weather permitting. You may bring your own lawn chair or blanket to sit on. All ages, registration is required!* *This program is made possible with funds from the Statewide Community Regrant Program, a regrant program of the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of the office of the Governor and the New York State Legislature and administered by GO ART! GO ART! acknowledges that the land on which this project takes place is the ancestral territory of the Seneca Nation, one of the Six Nations of the Haudenosaunee Confederacy. Grades 2-4 Adventure Club: Cave Painting

Melanie from Nioga will lead our adventurers this week. Using boxes, brown paper, chalk, and headlights, we will create a cave system that participants can navigate through and create art in. Participants will navigate (crawl through) a cardboard "cave" with headlamps and make their own cave drawings with chalk. This replicates the experiences of prehistoric humans who painted in dim light. Weather permitting, this program will be held outside. Grades 2-4. Registration required! *The times of our 2nd-4th grade and 5th-7th grade groups are scheduled so that they line up with dismissal of the STEAM Camps at Wolcott Street School. If your child is signed up for STEAM at the school on the date of one of our programs, let us know at registration and we will pick them up at their dismissal time like we do for after school programs. This only applies to kids going into 3rd-7th grades.

Join Miss Melissa every Wednesday this summer for these awesome prehistoric adventures! Each week we will do 2 different activities, ranging from art to science to games. Some weeks we will have special guests leading the programs! Grades 5th-7th (going into this fall). Registration is required! You must sign up for each session separately.* *The times of our 2nd-4th grade and 5th-7th grade groups are scheduled so that they line up with dismissal of the STEAM Camps at Wolcott Street School. If your child is signed up for STEAM at the school on the date of one of our programs, let us know at registration and we will pick them up at their dismissal time like we do for after school programs. This only applies to kids going into 3rd-7th grades. SCHEDULE: July 1: 3D Perler Bead Dinosaurs - Make 3D dinosaurs out of fuse beads, by creating multiple layers and snapping them together! We'll also make 2D dinosaurs and turn them into key chains or magnets. July 8: Clay Dinosaurs - Use colored air dry clay to mold a dinosaur, then decorate it with dry pasta, sequins, gems and more! Afterwards we'll play a dinosaur game. July 15: Salt Dough Dinosaur Fossils - Mix up the ingredients to create your own salt dough, then use mini dinosaur skeleton figures to create fossil impressions in the dough! We will also use an assortment of dried pastas to create dinosaur skeletons on paper. July 22: Prehistoric Paintings - Using watercolors we will paint a sunset background, then we'll glue paper dinosaur silhouettes on top. July 29: Fizzy Dinosaur Egg Experiment - Create baking soda dinosaur eggs, then we will hatch our eggs using pipettes and vinegar! We will also make tissue paper dinosaur suncatchers. August 5: Cave Painting - Learn about the prehistoric art of cave painting and then make your own "cave art" by painting the inside of a giant cardboard box "cave". This session will take place OUTSIDE! Led by Melanie from Nioga Library System. August 12: Dinosaur Terrariums - Create your own mini dinosaur habitat in a jar, complete with tiny dinosaur figures! Join Carolyn Dawson to learn how to play American Mah Jongg! The objective is to be the first to build a 14-tile hand that exactly matches a specific winning combination. We will supply all materials, no prior experience with the game is necessary. When you register it is for all 3 sessions, please plan to attend them all. They will be in the shape of a tree and participants will get to add personalized mini ornaments to it, with the names of their family members on them! Join Mandy from the Art of Mandy for this fun family program! Children and their adults will each paint their own dinosaur pottery piece (figure or mug), then it’ll be brought back to Mandy’s studio to be fired in the kiln. Pieces will be returned to the Library for pickup at a later date. Please be sure to select the number of people that will be painting pottery so we can be sure to have enough for everyone!
