Learn how to preserve cherished family recipes and build a family tree that includes both traditional and non-traditional family structures. Presented by Kate Kisselstein, local history and genealogy librarian at OCPL’s Central Library, this fun program offers tips on document preservation and introduces a family food tree activity, plus related activities perfect for engaging multiple generations. For adults ages 18 , this program is being offered both in person and on Zoom. Registration is required to get the Zoom information.

Share the joy of reading in a low pressure, no commitment atmosphere. This monthly silent book club is a BYOB (Bring Your Own Book) gathering where members can read together in the comfort of a cozy café, with no pressure to read what others are reading! Not sure what to read? There will be a small selection of fiction and nonfiction books available to choose from. Come enjoy some quiet time in the middle of your busy day or chat with others about what you are reading. Food and beverages are available for purchase. Registration is NOT required but will enable you to get a reminder email before the event. PLEASE NOTE: This event is held at the Salt City Coffee shop in the McNeil Firehouse, 1150 Salt Springs Rd., Syracuse, NY.

A casual book club where teens can bring whatever they are currently reading and discuss it with others. Teens can share their feelings on their book and also inspire others to try new books and explore new genres. It will meet weekly and is open to teens.

Register for a FREE family photo session at Soule Branch Library on either July 17 or August 21. These photo sessions are open to families of all kinds: families with multiple generations, small family units, and friends who are like family. Each group gets approximately 10 minutes for their photo session and a choice of two poses: both formals, both candids, or one formal and one candid. Two final shots will be provided to the group’s contact person digitally via email, about 1-2 weeks after the photo session. You must register in advance to reserve a time slot. Please indicate any accommodations needed on your registration form (ex: seating, disabled access). Then, complete a “Photography Release and Consent Form” (see "Attachments" below) and bring it to your session.

Come join us as Ola teaches us a watercolor resist technique using watercolor paint, colored pencils, and pen on watercolor paper. All necessary supplies will be provided. This class is for adults ages 18 and up; no previous experience is needed! Come to Soule Branch Library each month for a painting experience! “Artistic Creations with Ola” will continue every other month throughout 2026; “Free-Paint Sessions” will be led by Sarah on the opposite month. What can skin and bones tell us about one curious animal? Become a Paleoartist and see if you can figure out what mystery animal we will be learning more about. But just because we have solved one mystery, does not mean there isn't more to discover. We will work together to learn about how this special animal's skin and bones help us to learn more about their behaviors and adaptations. Finally, we will discover the dangers these creatures face, but never fear you can help and make a difference for these beautiful animals!

Syracuse is full of food forests, but we don’t always know what to do with the fruit we collect! This workshop will cover practical methods for cleaning, preparing, and preserving wild and locally harvested foods. Participants will learn techniques such as freezing, infusions, and basic preservation methods while discussing food safety and ways to incorporate seasonal ingredients into everyday meals. For adults ages 18 and up. Registration is required. Modern Heritage Kitchen @ Soule will continue every other month through November 2026 (different topics for each class). This program was made possible by a grant from the Off-Cycle Grants & Initiatives Fund at the Central New York Community Foundation. Put your mad puzzle skills to the test at our puzzle-building competition! Teams of 2-4 people will have two hours to complete as much as they can of a 750-piece jigsaw puzzle. The team who finishes first (or is closest to finishing their puzzle) wins a prize. This is open to all ages, so bring the kids for some family fun! Family boardgames and card games (and snacks!) will also be available post-contest from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., so stick around for an exciting evening at the library. Registration is required for the puzzle contest: Only one person needs to register per team and list the names of all your team members (you do NOT need to list their ages). You must register your team by Monday, July 27th. Space is limited to three teams. Please arrive on time at 1:45 p.m. to hear the rules; the contest will start promptly at 2:00pm. Sometimes people register and their teammates have to cancel, leaving 1-2 person teams. If you are open to me adding these individuals to your team to even-out all the team sizes, please email sneill@onlib.org.

Joseph Ndagijimana, Neighborhood Advisor for the Center for Healthy Aging at Interfaith Works, will be at the library on the 1st Monday of every month. He can help you with referrals for health care, legal advice, transportation, housing, nutrition and exercise, socialization, and information for caregivers. He can also assist with medical applications and enrollment forms, such as Social Security Income, SNAP, Elderly Pharmaceutical Insurance Coverage (EPIC) Program, and Home Energy Assistance Program (HEAP). Services are free and confidential. Joseph speaks English, French, Kinyarwanda, and Swahili. Interpretation is available in other languages.
