Live! Raptors in the Library!

Raptor Connections: Learn about birds of prey and their fascinating adaptations that make them incredible predators. Meet raptor ambassadors from Braddock Bay Raptor Research and get an understanding of the important role they play in the environment. The use of these live, non-releasable birds of prey will help participants gain a greater understanding of these unique predators and the important niche they fill in the environment! Quiet Sensory Storytime

This storytime is designed for families looking for a quieter, calmer storytime. We will be dimming the lights, playing soft instrumental music, and including quiet socializing and playtime. All families welcome, but if your kid has a lot of energy, this storytime may not be the best fit. We recommend weekday morning (10:30am) or Wednesday evening (6:30pm) storytimes for kids looking to jump and shout. Monday Evening Storytime is led by Stephani, our Youth Services Librarian Trainee! Magpie Glass Dino Craft

Jen Kuhn from Magpie Glass will be visiting the small parking lot between the library and rec center, and we will all work together to make decisions about what a glass dinosaur will look like as she makes it in her portable studio! Once the glass dino is finished, we will talk about dinos and fossils while doing a dinos and fossils craft you can take home. Jen will take the glass dino with her to cool down safely, then mail it to the library for everyone to see. Please bring blanket or chairs to sit on during the glasswork portion of the program, we will be sitting in the parking lot. America 250: Clara Barton, Dansville's Own "Angel of the Battlefield"

Clara Barton is well known for her contributions to battlefield nursing and her creation of the American Red Cross. For many years she made Dansville, Livingston County, her home base because of her close association with its famous “Our Home on the Hillside” water cure and the family who operated it. Learn what her life was like there through the research that local historian Jane Oakes has done using diaries and letters from private collections. Rainbow Reads - Teen Book Club

Rainbow Reads will explore powerful queer young adult narratives that dive into identity, resilience and self-discovery. Through graphic novels and fiction, we'll talk about the messy but still magical experience of growing up and finding your place in the world. This book club will meet four times and talk about a different book each week: June 30th - Flamer by Mike Curato July 7th - We Are Villains by Kacen Callender July 14th - The Magic Fish: a Graphic Novel by Trung Le Nguyen July 21st - A World Worth Saving by Kyle Lukoff We have copies of each book available at the library to check out ahead of each event! Teens entering 9th grade through teens leaving 12th grade are welcome to attend, please register so we know how many people to expect. Snacks will be provided. America 250: Thank You for the Music!

“When I was young, I’d listen to the radio, waiting for my favorite song.” — “Yesterday Once More" by The Carpenters, written by Richard Carpenter and John Bettis 1973; A&M Records, with rights managed by Universal Music Group Do you remember flipping through Billboard to see what songs made the Top 100? How about dialing into Casey Kasem’s American Top 40 to hear if your favorite song made the Top 10? Well, we've assembled a concert of beloved pop songs from the 1960s and 70s guaranteed to take you back to that time! The accomplished musicians of the Ann Mitchell Trio, featuring Ann Mitchell, John Gabriele and Dave Arenius, are known for their energetic performances of classic jazz repertoire. Together, the trio has performed in and around the Rochester and Buffalo area where they have been hailed as one of Upstate New York’s musical gems. Ann’s great focus has been to preserve and share the timeless songs recorded by artists such as Peggy Lee, Rosemary Clooney, Ella Fitzgerald, Julie London and more. Her interpretation and representation of the artists’ music are an inspiration to listeners of all ages and musical tastes. Mitchell is also a versatile creator/performer of specialized shows: A Tribute to Peggy Lee; JUDY! A Song Is Born; The Fabulous Females of the 40’s/50’s; and Songs of Burt Bacharach. Pianist John Gabriele, is a retired music teacher at Rochester’s School of the Arts. John conducted an award-winning choir and wrote several texts for piano and music theory that are in use today. Dave Arenius has spent over 50 years accompanying a host of well known singers and musicians in a variety of genres. Ann Mitchell Trio’s list of appearances include: Jazz 90.1; WAYO FM; Northwest Lewiston Jazz Festival; The Cabaret at Studio B; Rochester Fringe Festival; JazzBuffalo; Vanni’s Jazz Lounge; Prosecco’s Italian Restaurant and Jazz Bar; The New York State Fair; Fox Rochester; and News 10 NBC. Ann Mitchell's 2024 studio album, Again…for the first time, includes songs written by Gershwin, Rogers and Hart, Coleman and Leigh, Warren, Bacharach. Narcan Trainings with the Monroe County Department of Public Health

Representatives from the Department of Public Health Impact Team will be on hand to offer information about services, advice, support, referrals, and will also be offering quick, five-minute Narcan trainings to anyone who stops by and anyone who completes the training will receive a Narcan kit. What is Narcan? Narcan, also known as Naxolone, is a medicine that can be used in an emergency situation to rapidly reverse an overdose. To learn more about Narcan and to receive a free Narcan kit, stop by between 1-4pm. Registration is not required, but encouraged if you'd like to receive a reminder about the event. In July and August we are taking a break from our regularly scheduled Teen D&D and try a few other TTRPGs. Embrace your role as a bee farmer, or maybe the head of a crime syndicate.
