Between Two Worlds Film Screening- Mah Jongg in American Jewish Life

Source

West Caldwell - Community Meeting Room

Mah-jongg has been part of American life since the 1920s, but how did a game from China become a notable feature of Jewish American culture? Curator Melissa Martens Yaverbaum interviews Annelise Heinz, the author of Mahjong: A Chinese Game and the Making of Modern American Culture. Together they explore the Jewish American roots of the game, as well as its complicated and unpredictable journey. 72 minutes About the book: Mahjong: A Chinese Game and the Making of Modern American Culture explores the American history of the Chinese parlor game mahjong in the first half of the twentieth century. Mapping the history of mahjong in widely varied settings – Shanghai salons, Angel Island Immigration Station, American Chinatowns, Catskill resorts, and postwar suburbia – the project places the game at the heart of modern American redefinitions of race, gender, and consumer culture. Drawing from diverse archival sources, original oral histories, personal papers, popular media, photographs, and advertising, my research provides the first scholarly examination of mahjong and its broader cultural significance in America. Understanding the complex history of mahjong, I argue, provides crucial insights into the formation of American ethnic identities, the role of women in transnational consumerism, and the significance of leisure as a source of cultural meaning and identity. For more information on the author, click HERE This event took place on November 11, 2021 and it was presented online by the Yiddish Book Center in Amherst, MA. It was co-sponsored by the Museum of Jewish Heritage, Oregon Jewish Museum and Center for Holocaust Education, & The Jewish Museum of Florida-FIU. This recording was digitized and added to the library in April 2022. This presentation is part of the Yiddish Book Centers Public Libraries Program, a partnership with the American Library Association. Made possible by the Lilly Endowment, Inc.
