Reintroducing Woodlawn: A Legacy of Nonviolence and Neighborhood
Source
Sherwood Meeting Room, Sherwood Regional Library
You may know the name, but do you know the story? More than a historic site, Woodlawn & Pope-Leighey House was transformed from a plantation to an antislavery community, twenty years before the Civil War.
You are invited to a special presentation sharing the details of Woodlawn’s newest exhibition: “Friends Gather Here: A Legacy of Two Communities at Woodlawn”. We’ll dive into the history of the Quaker families who settled here in the mid-19th century and the established free Black community they joined. Together, they demonstrated the power of equality and free labor in a time of deep national division. Come learn how this history continues to shape our community identity today.
Adults. Registration is not required but will allow visitors to receive email reminders for the event and assist organizers with planning.
