Painting with Tea: America 250 Edition

with Smriti Sangal, Culture Chauraha Immerse yourself in a sensory art experience where brewed tea becomes your paint and history becomes your inspiration. In this aromatic workshop, participants will create sepia-toned artworks using tea washes, exploring warm gradients, soft textures, and the natural stain of tea. Surrounded by the calming scent of brewed tea, you'll experiment with brush techniques to build depth, contrast, and detail. Using references inspired by the Boston Tea Party among other general motifs, you'll design expressive pieces featuring ships, slogans, and freedom-themed imagery--or create your own playful, modern interpretations. This workshop blends creativity with storytelling, offering a relaxing hands-on experience suited for all skill levels. Participants leave with a beautiful tea-painted artwork and a newfound appreciation for this unique medium. This workshop is designed for adults. All materials provided. Registration is required.

With Carlos Pavan An Argentine composer and guitarist based in Brooklyn, he combines elements of current jazz and classical music with traditional Argentine tango and folklore. His famed concert presentations typically revolve around his original Suite Ficciones, which is a suite in the classical manner that was directly inspired by short stories written by Jorge Luis Borges, a renowned author from Argentina. Artist Information He received instruction from maestros Jorge Morel, Dave Smey (Brooklyn Conservatory), and Pablo Ziegler (pianist for A. Piazzolla). Carlos has produced four recordings featuring his compositions, which encompass a string quartet, chamber ensemble, and trio concertante. This event will be held in the community room 1

Exceptional Communicators in History & the Arts

With Annette DeCicco A 90-minute multimedia event presenting famous personalities in history and the arts who were/are outstanding communicators, some as storytellers and others who inspired through brevity, metaphor, analogy, and anaphora. Much of the content was based on Carmine Gallo's two published novels, The Storyteller's Secret and Five Stars: The Communication Secrets to Get from Good to Excellent. I also broadcast a TED Talk titled Ten Ingredients for a Meaningful Conversation. The session introduction is intended to engage the group's attention right away by telling them about the stories that we all have, how to dive deep, and how to communicate personally when appropriate. From there, the many types of stories—origin stories (Howard Schultz/Starbucks), overcoming overwhelming odds stories (JK Rowling/Harry Potter), and rags to riches (Alexander Hamilton and Lin-Manuel). Annette DeCicco is an educator with an MA in Education from Seton Hall University and holds an NJ real estate broker’s license. Her early career was as an instructor at Essex County College. She segued into real estate as managing broker of several local real estate offices, a role she held for 25 years. She has shared her knowledge at Fairleigh Dickinson U. and Rutgers U. through their programs of lifelong learning.
